Scott Macdonough
My lifelong fondness for figurative art began as a kid staring in awe at statues of Greek and Roman gods and goddesses. I later started collecting, and finally, nearing retirement, began creating, thanks to local life drawing opportunities. I tried painting — watercolor and oil — but find I prefer drawing, using pencils of all sorts. My specialty is monotone figure studies.
Along the way I decided to try modeling, found I liked it, and did it well. So now I work both sides of the easel, happy to share my talents with my colleagues.
A Connecticut yankee now living in southwest Florida, I spend four months each summer in southern Vermont. The Drawing Studio in Brattleboro is nearby, so It’s the perfect venue for continuing my artwork year-round.
I’ve joined as a full-time member, frequently attend its monitored life-drawing sessions, and occasional workshops. I also model from time-to-time, and like to donate the model fees I earn to the studio’s scholarship fund, which enables area high school art students to attend without charge. That fund also helps others in the community.
Most of the drawings shown on this website were done in Florida, where I’m active in the Atelier program at ArtsBonita’s Visual Arts Center in Bonita Springs, FL. Some are of myself — when I like a colleague’s artwork from their unique line-of-sight, I often ask them to take a photo I can work with at home — while the others are of fellow models, all who’ve become good friends.
‘Ms. Wampum’ refers to the talisman Michelle is wearing, of her own design and creation. ‘David, Giant Slayer’ speaks to Kevin’s dramatic pose that reminded me of Michelangelo’s famous statue. And ‘Emmanuel’ is the apt title on the drawing of myself recently shown in the ‘Connections’ exhibition at ArtsBonita: it means ‘God With Us’ in ancient Hebrew. The ‘green man’ is from the Green Mountain State (maybe that’s why he was such a pleasure to work with!).
