I am primarily a painter.  My subjects are people, scenes and still lifes that I have seen and feel drawn to, sometimes in combination with things that I imagine.  I don’t make political, theoretical or moral statements in my paintings. I trust that the imagery I am drawn to is meaningful enough even if I don’t really understand why I am drawn to it or what the meaning is. I  try to let the imagery speak for itself.

Making a painting or drawing that works (a topic too big for this space),  also requires some analytical skills that serve to balance  the less rational impulses that draw me to my subjects. Of all of the formal elements that matter in painting, color is the most important to me.

Attending the Friday Long Pose sessions at the Drawing Studio in November 2023, marked the end of a very long hiatus from life drawing - and most other art.  Even though I was rusty and my arm  was complaining about holding my hand up to the easel for hours, I grinned like an idiot through the entire  first session, giddy with the fun of drawing from a model again. I became a regular participant in the drawing groups and about a year later I officially became a Drawing Studio member.

I love the discipline, critical thinking and discovery that are involved in life drawing  and I also love the opportunity to talk to other artists and see how they have approached the subject.
