Realizing the Figure in Space
SATURDAY & SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 22 & 23,
2:00 - 5:00 PM
INSTRUCTED BY JOREN A. LINDHOLM
For many artists, drawing upon the relationship between the human body and the space around it can evolve into a ‘dance’ between the two that’s as dynamic and intricate as the figure itself. In fact, the figure can be perceived more fully when the subject includes its relationship to the enveloping space. This workshop will combine drawing from the live model with techniques found in the work of Cézanne and a selection of contemporary artists. Students will explore modern concepts of perceptual drawing that begin with scale & placement and, through fluid observation, bring about compositional development that can enhance both meaning and spontaneity in life drawing.
A sense of proportion, synergy and movement and versatile use of contour line will be the basis upon which fully developed drawing(s) will be produced. Additionally, there will be exercising using various types of line, mark and tonal massing in ways which explore applied Figure-ground principle and go beyond the specifics of appearance. Applicable to any type of drawing, students will have the ability to make the space (and stuff inside it) as interesting as the figure. Artists’ work and other technical references will be shared throughout the day.
